Dear President Wrighton, Provost Bracey, Dean Wahlbeck, Associate Dean Philbeck, Dean Gross, Dean Heap and Dean Ingraham;

We write on behalf of the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI) to express our grave concern about the treatment of Dr. Lara Sheehi by the administration of George Washington University (GWU) where she is a faculty member. We have been following the slanderous attacks on Dr. Sheehi by StandWithUs, a right-wing pro-Israel organization well known for targeting, defaming, and harassing supporters of Palestine. StandWithUs filed a Title VI complaint with the US Department of Education against GWU, falsely charging Dr. Sheehi with antisemitism. The complaint, directed against GWU, redacts all names but Prof. Sheehi’s–a clear indication of the way in which this organization has tried to isolate and individually target her.

This disingenuous approach on the part of StandWithUs is a familiar and well-documented one: in 2015, Jewish Voice for Peace highlighted the repressive methods StandWithUs employs to silence dissent by “filing complaints with the federal government that campuses are ‘hostile environments’ for Jewish students; conflating some Jewish students’ emotional discomfort with targeted harassment; contacting administrators in an effort to have events canceled and speakers disinvited; blacklisting professors; and launching public campaigns around faculty hires.” In their campaigns of harassment, StandWithUs relies upon definitions of antisemitism that conflate antisemitism with taking stands that assert the humanity of Palestinian people. Along with many Jewish people, the US Department of Education rejects this distorted definition of antisemitism.

Despite the fact that StandWithUs is known for its politically motivated attacks that rely upon falsely equating support for Palestinians with antisemitism–a clear violation of Dr. Sheehi’s academic freedom–GWU sent the complaint to a third-party investigator in what is a departure from its usual practices. In its press release from Sheehi’s legal representation, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) states that by “calling for an independent investigation into frivolous claims against her,” GWU “is setting a chilling precedent regarding academic freedom of their faculty by going against its internal processes which have already cleared Dr. Sheehi of any wrongdoing. To date, University leadership has chosen to deviate from the regular procedure and preemptively respond to spurious claims rather than wait to hear from the Department of Education, the entity responsible for adjudicating this claim.”

The GWU administration’s decision to retain a third-party investigator has only intensified the defamatory and malicious attacks against Dr. Sheehi by StandWithUs. By not following their standard practices to look into complaints, the administration sends the message that due process does not apply to Arab faculty and staff, including those who speak out on Palestine.

Instead of amplifying the attacks on Dr. Sheehi’s character, GWU should be acting to protect her from an organization known for engaging in nefarious tactics, including slander. Dr. Sheehi is deserving of strong support from GWU. Numerous letters of support highlight the extraordinary standing and respect that she has earned in her profession. We share a few of them here that testify to her standing as a well-respected professor, clinician, and scholar of unshakeable ethical integrity.

In registering their full support for their president and colleague “as she navigates a challenging and dangerous ordeal,” the American Psychological Association Division 39 writes: “We have worked with Dr. Sheehi for many years. She has been a singularly hardworking and effective leader in Division 39 and in psychoanalysis more broadly. She has a sterling record as a professor, clinician, and scholar. Many of us have spent time in her classrooms—whether as students, invited colleagues, or supervisors—and found them to be characterized by a climate of respect, free inquiry, and intellectual rigor.”

Dr. Sheehi’s Jewish colleagues have also rushed to her defense. In a letter of support signed by 190 Jewish psychoanalysts and clinicians, these colleagues laud her as “an internationally recognized clinician, scholar, activist, writer and beloved teacher.” They state: “Last year saw the release of her award-winning co-authored book with Stephen Sheehi, Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Theory and Practice in Palestine (Routledge 2021). We cannot overstate how important this groundbreaking book is to our field, both because of how it gives voice to those whose voices have been suppressed and because of its contribution to the expansion of psychoanalytic thinking itself. And we are saying this as Jewish clinicians and scholars who have experienced many times the way our profession silences these voices.”

Dr. Sheehi also holds leadership positions in two major psychoanalytic psychology organizations in the U.S. In addition to being President (and former Secretary) of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (Division 39 of the American Psychological Association), she is the Chair of the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Teachers’ Academy. She is also on the advisory boards of the USA-Palestine Mental Health Network and Psychoanalysis for Pride.

In universities across this country, faculty and students who speak up, in any way, about the human rights of Palestinians, are routinely targeted and smeared. Such attacks rely upon false charges of anti-Semitism that threaten and defame those taking principled stands against Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity. Many face official punishment or dismissal. At USACBI, we regularly hear about these cases, and we know just how damaging these ad hominem attacks have been to the cause of academic freedom and to the civil culture of US campuses. The AAUP has noted how such attacks undermine academic freedom, in a March 2022 statement which warns against the conflation of anti-Israel speech with antisemitic speech.

At a moment in time when horrific violence against Palestinians is intensifying with Israel’s recently elected extremist government that brings Israel ever closer to fascism, it is particularly incumbent upon university leaders to protect those speaking in support of the struggle for justice in Palestine. Surely Dr. Sheehi is more than deserving of support from GWU, rather than an intensification of StandWithUs’s desperate and cynical attacks on her.

We call upon the GWU administration to stand on the right side of history by protecting the basic academic freedom rights of one of its most valued professors.
