An American Studies Association Freedom Course Supporting Palestinian liberation in the US necessitates, to quote Edward Said’s famous phrase, speaking “the truth to power.” But it is also fundamental to recognize and challenge the different justifications that institutions use to silence, censor and repress activist and academic efforts in support of the Palestinian struggle.

When it comes to the question of Palestine, speaking “truth to power” is thus indissociable from being attuned to power’s various “untruths.” This ASA Freedom Course brings together scholars, academics, journalists and legal experts a report-back and skill-share about some of the latest attempts to silence Palestine speech in activism and academia, with panelists also making recommendations about how to continue moving forward in liberation-focused intellectual praxis and activism in spite of multi-scalar forms and tactics of repression.

Speakers will include:

Rabab Abdulhadi, Professor, Director of Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas (AMED) Studies program, San Francisco State University

Rani Allan, Law Student, George Washington University

Nora Barrows-Friedman, journalist, Electronic Intifada
