Letter of Support to Our Friends in the BDS Movement in France

English after French
April 14, 2010

We are Israeli citizens. We would like to express our support to our friends in France who promote the Palestinian call for the institutional boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) on Israel. We would like to stress that engaging in such activity is in no way discriminatory, anti-Semitic or inciting to racism, but quite the opposite, an action based on the universal values of freedom, equality, justice and human rights, and on international law.

As citizens devoted to the promotion of just peace and democracy in the region, we denounce the international community”s continued economic investments in Israel, which directly and indirectly sustain Israel’s daily violations of international law and accelerated colonization of the occupied territories. We realize that Israel”s occupation and oppression of the Palestinians will very likely not end without international pressure and sanctions.

Some of us are survivors of the Nazi regime”s atrocities or the children and grandchildren of such survivors. We wish to emphasize that it is not at all anti-Semitic or racist to criticize and oppose the Israeli regime”s policies and practices through BDS as it wasn’t racist to oppose the Vietnam War or the French occupation of Algeria. It is never anti-Semitic or racist to oppose injustice such as land theft, torture, detention without trial, the killing of civilians and all the elements of Israel”s occupation and oppression. In fact, it is those who wish to identify the State of Israel with all Jews – as if opposing one is opposing the other – who should be accused of racist generalizations, promoting a fixed, narrow view of the world’s Jewry.

We also reject claims that BDS, applied to institutions and not to individuals – is discriminatory in any way. It is both non-democratic and oppressive to allow impunity for institutions and states, while prosecuting those who call for their accountability. In a true democracy, it is individuals who should be protected to the highest extent by the law.

Promoting BDS for Palestine is a democratic act of appealing to people to make a conscientious decision through raising the oppressed Palestinian voice and exposing the grave human rights violations on the ground. It is not censorship, for it does not target individual freedom of speech, and because it does not assume a role of policing others. The cultural and academic boycott is neither a boycott of cultural or academic figures nor a boycott of their works, but rather a boycott of Israel and its cultural and academic complicit institutions.

For the above reasons, we honor your courageous initiative, in hope that it will set an example for many others to follow. The means of BDS are non-violent and legitimate means for pressuring Israel to change its policies – means which are now desperately needed in order to end Israel’s occupation and oppression of the Palestinians.
